Together with our sailing friends Linda and Toni from the sailing yacht "Paroo", we visit the Goanikontes Oasis in the Moon Valley. This fascinating place is only 75 km away from Walvis Bay. Our car trip leads through hot, inhospitable desert landscapes. Our destination is the Goanikontes Oasis Rest Camp where we have booked a bungalow each.

The camp is located in the picturesque Moon Valley between the Namib-Naukluft and Dorob National Parks. The Moon Valley is a remarkable landscape formation and owes its name to the lunar landscapes shaped by erosion, reminiscent of the surface of the moon. The colors of the Moon Valley vary depending on the time of day and lighting conditions, ranging from gentle earth tones to vibrant reds. At sunrise and sunset, the landscape is often bathed in a warm, golden light that enhances the surreal beauty of the Moon Valley even more.

When we arrive at the Goanikontes Oasis Rest Camp, we are amazed because, unlike the surroundings, there is plenty of vegetation here. It´s an oasis. The term "oasis" refers to the fact that Goanikontes has natural water sources, making it a life-giving center amidst the dry landscape. These water sources enable the survival of plants and animals in an otherwise quite inhospitable desert. Hence the name "Goanikontes," which has its roots in the Nama language. Its meaning is "The place where you can remove your fur coat." This name reflects the significance and function of the place, which was a traditional resting place for travelers and nomadic tribes passing through the region.

The founding of the camp dates back to the Dixon family, who settled here as the first white settlers in 1849. Initially, they established a company in Walvis Bay that traded with the Herero. Over time, Goanikontes became an important center for cattle breeding and agriculture.

Today, Goanikontes attracts visitors from all over the world. The interesting igloo-shaped accommodations offer a traditional atmosphere. Each igloo is equipped with outdoor barbecue facilities and a picnic table.

We undertake two extensive hikes in and around the Moon Valley and enjoy breathtaking views that we receive over the Moon Valley or the oasis from a nearby mountain.
