In the dim light of dawn, as the first pale glow touches the sky above Rathlin Island, we cast off our lines from the small marina. We have studied the wind forecast and tide tables carefully – today should bring no wild whirlpools or breaking waves. And yet, between Rathlin Island and the Northern Irish coast lies a small stretch of sea where short, white-crested waves hint at the power that rests beneath. No wonder that during the last storm, not a single ferry ran between Rathlin and Ballycastle.

With a steady yet expectant course, we set our sights on the Kintyre Peninsula – that protective arm shielding the Clyde from the North Atlantic’s storms. At its southern tip lies the legendary “Mull of Kintyre” – Beatles fans will no doubt already be humming the tune.

A little further north, the bay of Campbeltown opens before us, guarded by the island of Davaar with its lighthouse. At low tide, one can almost walk to it, but we keep SuAn safely between the channel markers. By midday, the anchor drops in Scottish waters.
