It is the 14th of July. A public holiday in France, which was started to be celebrated in 1881 in Tahiti, after French Polynesia became a part of France. Since that time it has developed from a military parade to a festival with traditional sports and dancing of the Polynesian Islands.

In Papeete there is still a military parade by the French rulers, but also the finish line of the Va´a Taie canoe regattas. We decide to see the traditional Polynesian sports in Punaauia, south of our anchorage. Many spectators have arrived despite the rainy weather to watch the competitions. Today, the second day of the competition manly the men fight for the prices. Yesterday the women competed against each other. The traditional Polynesian sports are quite practical sports, which are closely related to the Polynesians daily work in the islands.

Quite a few spectator came despite the rainy weather to watch the spectacle. What a fun day.
