Sailing the North Sea
Our next leg takes us across the North Sea – waters we have not yet experienced during our circumnavigation. We are planning a mix of shorter day trips along Britain’s east coast and longer passages across open water.
On the chart, the North Sea looks like a maze of obstacles: offshore oil and gas platforms, vast wind farms and countless shipwrecks dating back to the two World Wars. At the same time, there is heavy commercial traffic, demanding our full attention whenever we are at sea.
Another defining feature is the relatively shallow water combined with a large tidal range. At low tide, huge areas close to the coast become extremely shallow or even dry out. As a result, many harbours can only be entered at certain times, when there is enough water beneath the keel.
The North Sea promises to be a fascinating and demanding chapter of our journey. Here, careful preparation and thorough planning will be more important than ever.
