| The name Lodberry comes from the Old Norse word Hlaðberg, meaning a place where boats could come alongside to load or unload cargo. In Lerwick, the distinctive Lodberry houses were built right on the waterfront, with narrow inlets between them. Small boats could sail directly into these sheltered bays, allowing goods to be transferred straight from the boat to the merchants' stores and warehouses. This ingenious design made trading fast and efficient and remains a fascinating reminder of Lerwick's rich maritime heritage. |
