| When sailing downwind, we need to keep the sails stable and prevent them from collapsing or accidentally swinging to the other side. The mainsail boom is secured to leeward with a preventer line, while the genoa is held out to windward with the spinnaker pole. If we change course, both sails have to be moved to the opposite side—a job that means working on the foredeck of a rolling boat. |
