Stornoway has always been closely connected to the sea. Its name is widely believed to derive from Old Norse, reflecting the strong Viking presence in the Outer Hebrides. It is thought to mean "Steering Bay"—a well-sheltered harbour where ships could safely enter or adjust their course before continuing their voyage.
