Campbelltown

Campbeltown, set on the sheltered eastern shore of the Kintyre Peninsula, is often called the “whisky capital” of the region. Once a bustling fishing and shipbuilding hub, it was also home to over 30 whisky distilleries in the 19th century – today, only a few remain, keeping the town’s proud tradition alive. Its location makes it the closest Scottish port to Ireland, a natural stopping point for mariners crossing the North Channel.

The harbour is a broad, well-protected bay with a small industrial dock and a cosy marina. We tie our dinghy here, eager to wander the streets. The day has already slipped into late afternoon; the distillery’s doors are closed, as are most shops and the local museum. Instead, we gather fresh fruit and vegetables from a supermarket, then seek out our first Scottish pub.

Perched with a pint in hand, we enjoy a view across the quiet marina in the harbour bay against the backdrop of green hills.
