Along State Road 12, we head north and arrive at Waipua Forest, a large forest area that has the most, largest and oldest endemic Kauri trees in New Zealand. Here is also Tane Mahuta, the most famous and probably the largest and oldest of the Kauri trees.

Many legends surround lt. In the mythology of the Maori, the native New Zealanders, Tane Mahuta is the god of the forest, who also brought the light to earth. Since this particular Kauri tree with 51m height and 13,40m circumference is the largest and with 2000 years the oldest of its species, it is particularly revered by the Maori and got the name of the god of the forest: Tane Mahuta.
