For the night we camp in the dunes right behind the Ninty Mile Beach, a beach at the west coast, in the far north of New Zealand’s North island. This beach is not only wide, but very long. It reaches from Kaitaia all the way to Cape Reinga. The Name Ninty Mile Beach is a little exaggerated, since the beach is “only” 55 miles long.

In 1932 the beach was used as the runway for some of the earliest airmail services between Australia and New Zealand. Today it is officially a public highway and sometimes used as an alternative road to State Highway 1 north of Kaitaia and there is even a speed limit of 100km/h.
